There are many things I love about my work. One of those things is that I am able to witness and document people I care about as they move through milestones in their lives and in their love. This beautiful mother, M, has been a dear friend to me for over two decades. We adventured our way through high school together, and I was honored to, years later, photograph her wedding to an amazing man.
Their first child was born four years ago. I was in the hospital to photograph the first hours of her daughter’s life. Recently M launched a new business, and we have been collaborating on portraits for this new chapter of her professional life. This summer she and her husband and their daughter B will welcome a new member of their family. We met up this past weekend to take some family portraits and pause at the moment before three become four.
We met on Saturday morning at Christopher Columbus Park, walkable from both their home and my studio. It was a very sunny day, the first in a long time that felt like it was truly spring. A nice change from the past six months that I have been primarily photographing portraits indoors. This is a lifestyle family portrait session – and cumulatively we will one day reach an epic book-length photo essay.
And my how she’s grown! B is charming, self-assured, curious and loving – just like her mother. Now B is going to be a big sister, and she couldn’t be more excited about it. She practiced singing and dancing and gently hugging : all the other sisterly arts.
Before we said our goodbyes, B wanted to go on a carousel ride. She was right. It went faster than I expected. Joni Mitchell’s Circle Game played in my head.
